Liberty Utilities in Massena is part of a large multi-state consortium to compete for federal funding to be named a regional hydrogen energy center.

Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday signed an agreement with Connecticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

“New York’s ambitious goal of achieving a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040 requires a multifaceted approach, unprecedented collaboration, and technologies and resources yet to be developed. We at the New York Power Authority are intrigued by the role hydrogen can play in pushing us toward this decarbonized future,” said NYPA Acting Chairman Justin Driscoll.

The collaborative group includes more than 40 partner companies, utility authorities and universities. In addition to Liberty Utilities, National Grid and Vermont Gas Systems will participate in the initiative.

Liberty supplies natural gas to parts of northern St. Lawrence County, as well as Franklin and Lewis counties.

The group’s goal is to create a plan for a regional hydrogen ecosystem that advances each state’s greenhouse gas reduction goals.

New York aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% between 1990 and 2050.
