Residents of Chaffee County can tour sustainable homes and learn how to save money by using less energy during the third annual Chaffee Green Home Tour on September 11-12.

The free tour starts at the Salida Farmer’s Market in Salida from 9:00 a.m. on Saturday September 11. Tour participants can pick up tour cards at kiosks from sponsors including New Energy Colorado (NECO) and the Greater Arkansas Nature Association (GARNA).

Both organizations will hold booths showcasing a variety of energy efficiency measures that homeowners can install at little or no cost. Five houses in Salida will be open until 1:00 p.m. for tours that will showcase their energy efficiency, renewable energies and sustainable living practices.

On September 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., an information stand in Buena Vista will be open at the Farmer’s Market. Participants will visit five homes and a business using renewable energy and energy efficiency measures.

GARNA, Tour Co-Sponsor Dominique Naccarato explained “Each year the Green Home Tour provides community members with countless ideas and examples to increase household sustainability and save money. We hope that many residents of Chaffee County will take advantage of this unique opportunity. ”

New Energy Colorado works to engage citizens in shaping the future by providing education on how our energy system and utilities work today, and the changes needed to pave the way for a future dominated by the energy efficiency, renewable energies and a smart grid. For 25 years, the nonprofit has sponsored a green house tour on the Denver subway.

NECO Tour Coordinator Sheila Townsend explained, “The Chaffee Green Homes Tour offers hands-on experience with some of the area’s leading sustainable homes. We are excited to showcase homes using technologies such as solar power with battery backup, straw bale house construction and passive solar construction. ”

The event is also part of the American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour.
